Be careful driving in Zakynthos. In Greece, we drive on the right hand side of the road. There are many main roads in Zante but as you explore the island you will find that most of the country roads are narrow with steep ditches on either side. Be aware of your stopping distances as the road surfaces can become slippery, and be especially careful when riding a bicycle or a moped. Always wear a helmet on a motorcycle or moped, firstly it is against the law not too and fines can be heavy but more importantly for your own safety.
Road signs in Zante are written in English and in Greek but in some of the more remote mountainous areas they can be few and far between. Not to worry, you will find that the locals are always ready and willing to help you on your way.
Drinking and driving is against the law in Greece and penalties are harsh. There are always taxis available for you and the rates are reasonable. Business owners will surely call a taxi for you and taxi ranks are located in all the main resorts, usually in a central location and easy to find. Remember that it is a good idea to carry a business card of the accommodation that you are staying in with you, it's easy to forget the name or location of your residence, especially in the first couple of days of your stay.
Sun, Sea and Sand are a major part of your holiday abroad I'm sure. Please take care, though it is great to relax on the beach all day, never go out in the sun in Zakynthos without wearing sun protection lotion. Nobody likes the pain of burnt and blistered skin and lobster red is never a good look. It can get very hot out there, make sure that you drink plenty of water throughout the day and always take water with you when you are exploring the island, dehydration can ruin your holiday.
Most businesses in Zakynthos accept credit cards these days, but not all, it is best to ask before you order or else you may be running to find a cash point while your partner orders dessert! It is usually not necessary to book a table when dining out but is recommended if your party is for six people or more so that space can be made available for you.
Although the majority of the Greeks in the Tourism industry speak English, it's always appreciated if you try one or two words in Greek during your trip, for example,
There are many phrase books available in Greek, why not pick one up and have a practice.
Most of all, enjoy your trip to Zante...To visit Zakynthos once is to return time and time again...
